At least 8,863 ghost workers on the payroll of both the Kwara state and local governments have been uncovered, said a committee that audited the workforce of the state.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), who doubles as the Alternate Chairman of the Personnel Data Base Development Committee, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, disclosed this while submitting the committee’s report to the state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, at Government House, Ilorin, on Tuesday, November 22.
The committee further stated that the development could potentially save the state and its 16 local governments N437 million monthly.
During the presentation of the report, Alhaji Gold said that about 8,863 personnel did not appear for a staff biometric verification exercise carried out by the committee.
The SSG also explained that at the time of commencing the verification, the total number of staff on the payroll of both the state and local governments was 81,446.
He, however, noted that only 72,583 of the workers and pensioners scaled the verification process.
Summarising further, the alternate chairman said that of the 35,656 workers on the state government payroll, only 31,652 were verified, leaving 4,004 unverified personnel.
He said out of the 45,790 workers and pensioners on the payrolls of the 16 LGs in the state, only 40,931 were verified, with 4,859 unverified.
In his response, Governor Ahmed endorsed all the findings of the committee and directed the State Ministry of Finance to adopt the committee’s report to prepare the payroll of both the local and state government workers henceforth.
